Is Your Toddler a Team Player?
It seems the age children start playing team sports gets younger all the time. A little league or sports club can be a great way for toddlers to learn a sport, get some exercise and have fun. But organized team sports aren’t for every young child. Before you ask your toddler if he wants to sign up for soccer or T-ball, think about these factors to help determine if he’s ready.
- Does he seem eager to join a team?2
- Is he physically coordinated and fit enough to keep up?1
- Does he play well with other kids?1
- Does he listen well and pay attention when others speak?1
- Is he especially shy or intimated by other children or adults he doesn’t know?2
- Can he follow directions without getting confused or insisting on doing things his way?1
- Can he control his emotions, especially frustration and anger?1
At this age, playing a team sport is a chance for your child to develop physical and social skills such as sportsmanship and communication. It should not be overly competitive and should make him feel good, regardless of how he performs.2 To help make sure the team you’re considering is right for him, go to a few games and see how the coaches and parents act. If they push the kids too hard or the atmosphere is competitive or tense, look elsewhere.1
Remember, your toddler needs at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. If you rule out team sports, there are plenty of other options, including individual sports such as swimming, dancing or karate.3 The important thing is to choose something that’s fun, challenges him in a safe environment and is a positive experience for everyone involved.3
